Academy Award Nominations 2013

oscarstatuetteThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) have announced the nominations for the 86th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film in 2013.

In the Best Original Score category, the nominees are:

  • WILLIAM BUTLER and OWEN PALLETT for Her
  • ALEXANDRE DESPLAT for Philomena
  • THOMAS NEWMAN for Saving Mr. Banks
  • STEVEN PRICE for Gravity
  • JOHN WILLIAMS for The Book Thief

These are the first Oscar nominations for Butler, Pallett and Price, although Price was nominated for a Golden Globe earlier this year for Gravity, and Butler and Pallett have been nominated for 7 Grammy awards for their work as members of the rock group Arcade Fire. This is the 6th Oscar nomination for Desplat, the 12th Oscar nomination for Newman, and the 49th Oscar nomination for Williams, who previously won in 1971 for Fiddler on the Roof, 1975 for Jaws, 1977 for Star Wars, 1982 for E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, and 1993 for Schindler’s List.

In the Best Original Song category, the nominees are:

  • KRISTEN ANDERSON-LOPEZ and ROBERT LOPEZ for “Let It Go” from Frozen
  • PAUL HEWSON (BONO), DAVID EVANS (THE EDGE), ADAM CLAYTON and LARRY MULLEN Jr. for “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom
  • KAREN ORZOLEK and SPIKE JONZE for “Moon Song” from Her
  • PHARRELL WILLIAMS for “Happy” from Despicable Me 2

A fifth nomination, “Alone Yet Not Alone” from the film Alone Yet Not Alone by Bruce Broughton and Dennis Spiegel, was issued, but later rescinded when it was discovered that Broughton had breached Academy campaign rules

The winners of the 86th Academy Awards will be announced on March 2, 2014.

Academy Award Winners 2012

danna-oscarThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) have announced the winners of the 85th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film in 2012.

In the Best Original Score category composer Mychael Danna won the award for his score for Life of Pi. In his acceptance speech, Danna said:

I share this wondrous award with our visionary captain, Mr. Ang Lee – there he is! We’re playing this game again! – who guided a truly global cast and crew in the telling of this wondrous, beautiful story that transcends culture and race and religion. In the same spirit, musicians from around the globe came together to breathe life into this music, and I hold this award on their behalf. I want to thank my beautiful Fox family, my mom who’s in a balcony here watching, my father who’s also watching, and most of all my wife Apurna and our two beautiful boys who remind me every day why stories like this need to be told. Thank you everyone. Thank you, Academy. Thank you.”

The other nominees were Alexandre Desplat for Argo, Dario Marianelli for Anna Karenina, Thomas Newman for Skyfall, and John Williams for Lincoln.

In the Best Original Song category, the winners were Adele Atkins and Paul Epworth for “Skyfall”, the title song from the James Bond film of the same name.

The other nominees were Mychael Danna and Bombay Jayashri for “Pi’s Lullaby” from Life of Pi; Walter Murphy and Seth MacFarlane for “Everybody Needs A Best Friend” from Ted; Joshua Ralph for “Before My Time” from Chasing Ice; and Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil and Herbert Kretzmer for “Suddenly” from Les Misérables.

In the Best Original Score category, the nominees are:

Academy Award Winners 2011

bource-oscarThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) have announced the winners of the 84th Academy Awards, honoring the best in film in 2011.

In the Best Original Score category French composer Ludovic Bource won the award for his score for the silent film The Artist. In his acceptance speech, Bource said:

Wow. I want to pay, first of all, tribute for the power of the music, and I want to thank you and pay tribute to my co-nominees, Mr. Williams, Mr. Shore and Mr. Iglesias. Hans Zimmer is downstairs, he refused to submit this year, so I thank you charity Hans Zimmer, I don’t know if you can see. Thank you to all the musicians tonight, it’s a wonderful show. Can I have ten second more, Hans? Sorry, I have a little speech. I’d like to thank the Academy for this Oscar. You have given a man a special honor. To all of you, please accept me, because I have got so much love to give. I’ve got so much love to give to you. My wife Sara is there {speaks French}, thank you for all. Thank you Michel [Hazanavicius].”

The other nominees were Alberto Iglesias for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Howard Shore for Hugo, John Williams for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, and John Williams again for War Horse.

In the Best Original Song category, the winners was New Zealand-born musician Bret McKenzie from the musical comedy group Flight of the Conchords for the song “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets.

The other nominees were Sérgio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett for “Real in Rio” from Rio.

  • ALBERTO IGLESIAS for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
  • HOWARD SHORE for Hugo
  • JOHN WILLIAMS for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
  • JOHN WILLIAMS for War Horse

This is the first Oscar nomination Ludovic Bource, who won the Golden Globe for his score for The Artist earlier in the season. Academy Award Winners 2010

reznor-oscarThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) have announced the winners of the 83rd Academy Awards, honoring the best in film in 2010.

In the Best Original Score category Trent Reznor, front man of the rock group Nine Inch Nails, and composer Atticus Ross, won the award for their score for the Facebook-themed drama The Social Network. In his acceptance speech, Reznor said:

Wow. Is this really happening? When we finished work on The Social Network we were very proud of our work and happy to just be involved in this film, and to be standing up here in this company is humbling and flattering beyond words. I’d like to especially thank the Academy for recognizing our work here, and David Fincher… David Fincher, yeah. Thank you so much for the opportunity. I’d also like to thank my wonderful wife Mariqueen, I love you so much”.

Ross continued:

“Time’s nearly out, so I’ve got to improvise a little. David, everyone who brought the film to life, thank you so much. Trent, I think you’re a genius. A great friend, and a genius. My wonderful wife Claudia, and our three children, I love you. Thank you.”

The other nominees were Alexandre Desplat for The King’s Speech, John Powell for How to Train Your Dragon, A.R. Rahman for 127 Hours, and Hans Zimmer for Inception.

In the Best Original Song category, composer/songwriter Randy Newman won his second Oscar for We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3.

The other nominees were Tom Douglas, Troy Verges and Hillary Lindsey for “Coming Home” from Country Strong; Alan Menken and Glenn Slater for “I See The Light” from Tangled; and A.R. Rahman, Dido Armstrong and Rollo Armstrong for “If I Rise” from 127 Hours.

In the Best Original Score category, the nominees are:

  • ALEXANDRE DESPLAT for The King’s Speech
  • JOHN POWELL for How to Train Your Dragon
  • A.R. RAHMAN for 127 Hours
  • TRENT REZNOR and ATTICUS ROSS for The Social Network
  • HANS ZIMMER for Inception

These are the first Oscar nominations Powell, Reznor and Ross, although Reznor and Ross picked up a Golden Globe nomination for The Social Network earlier in the season. This is the 4th Oscar nomination for Desplat, the 2nd Oscar nomination for Rahman, who won the Award in 2009 for Slumdog Millionaire, and the 9th Oscar nomination for Zimmer, who previously won in 1994 for The Lion King.

In the Best Original Song category, the nominees are:

  • TOM DOUGLAS, TROY VERGES and HILLARY LINDSEY for “Coming Home” from Country Strong
  • ALAN MENKEN and GLENN SLATER for “I See The Light” from Tangled
  • RANDY NEWMAN for “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3
  • A.R. RAHMAN, DIDO ARMSTRONG and ROLLO ARMSTRONG for “If I Rise” from 127 Hours

The winners of the 83rd Academy Awards will be announced on February 27, 2011.
