Original Review by Jonathan Broxton

Americana is a modern western crime thriller written and directed by Tony Tost, starring Sydney Sweeney, Paul Walter Hauser, Eric Dane, Zahn McClarnon, and Halsey. The film centers on a rare Native American artifact that falls into the black market, sparking an increasingly violent conflict between various characters including a waitress, a US military veteran, a hardened criminal, and an indigenous leader. The film was shot in 2022 in New Mexico and premiered at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in 2023, but then it languished in distribution hell for a couple of years, before finally receiving a belated theatrical release in August 2025. Unfortunately, despite decent critical reviews, the film was an enormous commercial flop and disappeared from cinemas after just a couple of weeks, with some people suggesting that a backlash to Sweeney’s recent controversial American Eagle jeans commercial may have contributed to its failure. WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS PLOT SPOILERS. IF YOU HAVE NOT YET SEEN THE FILM, YOU MIGHT WANT TO CONSIDER WAITING UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE DONE SO TO READ IT.

I was three years old when the Richard Donner Superman movie came out in 1978. It’s one of the first films I remember watching as a child, when it was shown on TV several years later, and it’s one of the first film scores I remember loving. For me Christopher Reeve remains the absolute gold standard when it comes to portraying the man of steel. In the almost 50 years since then we have seen different Supermen on the big screen – Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill – and on the small screen – Dean Cain, Tom Welling, others – all of whom bring a new take and new perspective on the character. This year’s Superman is actor David Corenswet, and the film is simply called ‘Superman’. Thankfully it’s not another origin story, and instead the film jumps right into the action with Superman and his journalistic alter-ego Clark Kent embroiled in battles on multiple fronts: fighting against the machinations of his nemesis Lex Luthor, trying to keep the peace between the fictional warring nations of Boravia and Jarhanpur, and trying to maintain his own sense of self and identity following some shocking revelations about his parentage, while also having a relationship with his colleague, investigative journalist Lois Lane, who knows his secret identity. Eventually all these plot strands converge in a battle to save Metropolis. Read more…

Original Review by Jonathan Broxton

Hillbilly Elegy is a multi-generational family drama directed by Ron Howard, based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by J. D. Vance. Gabriel Basso stars as Vance, a young man from rural Kentucky in the Appalachian mountains, who becomes the first in his family to attend college. Vance is called back from Yale to his home town to deal with a family emergency, and the film explores his relationship with his heroin-addicted mother, his world-weary but kind-hearted grandmother, and his troubled sister, while also looking at the broader socio-economic hardships suffered by communities like his. The film co-stars Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Haley Bennett and Frieda Pinto, and is poised to be a major contender for acting awards at the 2020 Academy Awards. Read more…
